Preheat the oven to 275°F. Place butter in your choice of a 9x13, 9x9, or 8x8 -inch baking dish and set it on the oven rack to melt.
Directions for 12 muffin tins: Split ½ cup of butter evenly into 12 unlined muffin cups and place in oven to melt.
In a medium size bowl, mix together flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and additional ingredients for the specific fruit. Stir in milk.
Remove the baking dish from the oven as soon as butter is melted. Pour batter into the dish, but do not stir. Pour fruit evenly into the pan and do not stir.
Directions for 12 muffin tins: Put 2 Tbsp batter in each cup and then 1 heaping Tbsp filling in the center of each cup. Don't stir. (There will be leftovers of both)
Raise the oven temperature to 350°F Bake cobbler for 50 to 60 minutes, until golden brown. Sprinkle additional granulated sugar on top in the last 10-15 min of baking (around the 40 min mark).
Directions for 12 muffin tins: Bake until golden brown (about 25 min), sprinkling with sugar after about 15-20 minutes.
Let cool for at least 30 min before serving with whipped cream or ice cream. Allow to cool completely before covering.
